Acne Myths - Does Chocolate Cause Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition especially amongst adolescents and can vary from mild to extremely disfiguring. It is painful and embarrassing and acne myths surrounding the condition do not help.

Myth no 1 : Acne is caused by dirt. This leads to sufferers vigorously washing and scrubbing the face which will just make the irritation worse particularly if harsh soap is used.

Myth no 2 : Acne is caused by stress. research suggests that stress is not a cause of acne although it can make the condition worse. Some medications prescribed for stress can actually make the acne worse including lithium which is used for severe psychological conditions.

Myth no 3 : Acne should be left until the sufferer 'grows out of it : Acne can last for many years and cause a great deal of scarring. While it usually clears up in the early twenties it can continue into the thirties or even the forties. Leaving it untreated can result in scarring and very many years of distress.

Myth no 4 : Eating greasy foods causes acne : Although eating greasy foods is definitely not good for your health it will not contribute to the excess sebum production that produces pimples and blackheads.

Myth no 5 : Eating chocolate causes acne : There is no scientific evidence at all to link eating chocolate to acne. while overindulging in chocolate is not good for you it won't make you break out in pimples.
